12/20/02 I did a complete rebuild on a '72 XLCH sportster. I too wanted to put on forward controls, I bought the more expensive set ($300), it had steel rods for the linkage, not steel cable. Before the rebuild I had installed the after market oil filter that mounts on the front left motor mount. The brake forward control will not clear the oil filter. I had to turn mine over, making them longer and lower, just the opposite of your problem. (I'm 5' 11") So, the reason for this note....... if you have the type of after market oil filter that mounts on the left front motor mount, you better mount it temporary to check out the clearance.
